Here is the fifth part of a six-part series featuring those special people who make art and entertainment out of folding air into latex balloons. Our conversations centered on making a living doing art, how they started in the biz and their creative processes. Laypeople and twisters alike will enjoy these fantastic conversations.

Suzanne and Lanna talk about getting paid for their work, career trajectories, reinventing themselves, and being the funny girls. Daughter of an opera singer, Suzanne explains why she doesn't sing. Lanna airs some dirty laundry. Suzanne chats about her time as a Clown in Residence at Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. And she answers 10 questions.

Suzanne Haring

Suzanne Haring is The Soozi Show! Sheʼs been bringing her unique brand of entertainment to family & corporate events, movie premieres and festivals all around the world since 1982.

Soozi has entertained at parties for both the NY Yankees and the LA Angels playersʼ families (major rivals in... football is it?), performs in one-of-a-kind balloon body puppets on stilts (and once on a Segway!) at Disney Movie Premieres including Up, Wall-e, Ratatouille, & Pirates of the Caribbean 2, 3 & 4 (accidently blocking Johnny Depp's entourage with her big-arse balloon ship). She is one of 60 multinational performers invited to entertain at the First 3 International Clown Festivals in Mainland China, has been the Production Manager for the world's largest balloon art project - Airigami's Balloon Manor (a 10,000sf haunted mansion built from over 100,000 balloons), entertained hundreds of hospitalized children with the award winning Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit in NY, performed her Statue of Liberty on Stilts for the 2004 Republican National Convention, body painted models at The Playboy Mansion(!) and entertained at family parties for The Sultan of Brunei (and lived to tell about it!), Johnny Depp, Neil Patrick Harris and lots of other nice people.

Suzanne is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and the world famous MAGIC CASTLE in Hollywood.

I am excited to present the first part of a six-part series featuring those special people who make art and entertainment out of folding air into latex balloons. Our conversations centered on making a living doing art, how they started in the biz and their creative processes. Laypeople and twisters alike will enjoy these fantastic conversations.

Tawney and Lanna talk about balloon twisting, performance and living the artist's life. They tease each other about adult stuff and dish on balloon dresses. Tawney explains how she started in the biz. And she answers 10 questions.

Tawney Bubbles

So who is Tawney Bubbles? She’s the luckiest girl in the whole wide world, that’s who. At nearly 18, an eager faced little high school graduate set out for higher education. Turns out, college is really expensive. Reluctantly, she had to get a job. In a move that was part joke, and part rebellion, she became a clown (her mom is very proud).

Four years, well maybe five years, okay five and a half years later, she had her degree. She contemplated a real job, but after careful reflection, eventually said, “$!@#% that!” She’s been playing with balloons ever since.

Here is our second LLLSalon night! Our theme was Inspiration. Gennifer, Allie, Edmund, Keith, Candace and I talk about how inspiration is a lot of hard work and that you need to get out of the car every now and again.

Historically a Salon is a intellectual gathering where the hostess gathers a group of interesting people together to discuss politics, literature, art, music and other topics of the day. It would last over a long dinner which included several courses. These salons attracted the intellectual elite and were meant to educate and amuse their guests. I always loved the idea of a good salon. People wielded power in salons.

Each Lounging with LannaLee episode acts as if it were a mini-salon, with me and one or two guests. When I Lounged with Candace Karu I told her of my dream: to do a larger scale lounge. And to my great surprise and immense pleasure, she volunteer to host a dinner party at her house so we could do this.

Jan 17, 2013

It's time for some inspiration for the new year. Here are three conversations that inspire me. Steve, a conservation biologist, and I talk about how he helps his students tell stories about ecology and he tells a story of how he came to collaborate/help start the Ghana Antelope Project. TLOVE and I talk about poetry, and she performs my favorite of her poems. And Rob Gould (@bobbbyg) answers 10 questions like nobody's business.

Mya Achmatowicz

Mya is an author of young adult fantasy, the darker and twistier the better. She grew up in the wilds of Michigan and Maine, which is probably why even her love stories are full of blood. Her chief vices are coffee, books, and The Vampire Diaries, with a side of Gossip Girl.

In a sketchy band practice room, Luke, Will and Lanna talk about growing up in Piscataquis County, high school politics, and the creative life. Will gets all existential. Luke chooses not to be miserable. Will and Luke extol the virtues of touring and hanging with Six Guys in a van. And they answer 10 questions.

Luke Mallett

One of two members of MBB that's a son of famed folk singer David Mallett, Luke began playing music as soon as he could walk. In the Mallett house, with instruments perpetually slumbering on various pieces of furniture like cats, it was easy enough. Early forays on the piano and bass guitar placed him in a number of hardcore bands in high school before he eventually joined Lab Seven, long regarded as one of the premier hip hop acts in Portland, Maine; and, finally, Boombazi, where he joined Leen and Soule in the mid-2000's. A lyrical firehose, Luke's hip hop background is credited by some as the source of his distinctive vocal and lyrical style that makes him one of the favorite vocalists (of any genre) in the Portland, Maine music scene.

Will Mallett

Will Mallett, Cosmopolitan Magazine's "Maine's Hottest Bachelor" of 2011, is one of MBB's primary songwriters, contributing musically on acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, and lead and backup vocals. He co-founded the Mallett Brothers Band along with Luke and Nick in 2009. He enjoys swimming in rivers and long rides in vans.

In my spare time I host journaling, visioning and creativity retreats. Otherwise, I just spend my days being incredibly thankful. Recent moment of self-awareness: I use too many exclamation points. I'm trying to stop. Really!

Here is a special episode of Lounging with LannaLee with three shorter interviews in it! Each person was asked the same five questions, but as you can hear, the answers run the gamut; from silly to serious.

The first two interviews are from Kansasians Jack Mace and James "Jiggy Jaguar" Lowe. I met them when I traveled on the road to the SmallTown2012 conference last week, and they were kind enough to chat with me for a moment. The third interview is from a video I shot with John Hill Rogers (converted to audio-only for your lisenting pleasure).

I love doing these shorter interviews, and I'll keep doing them. Some of them will be available to everyone, others only for premium subscribers.

After a delicous homemade meal, John and Lanna chat about how they met (at the Stonecoast Writers' Conference), magic pants, and who has magic in his pants. John explains how he deals with his ADHD. They talk about John's homesteading, music, and creativity seminiar. John recommends a couple of books. And he answers 10 questions.

John Hill Rogers

John is a Creative Cognitist, a title given him by one of his creative partners. A proud ADHD adult, he has many creative pursuits, all of which are supported by his career as an Information Security Consultant/Systems Engineer. He believes that creativity is inherent to being alive, and prefers to talk about people involved in creativity rather than "creative people". He has worked as a cook and chef, and loves working with food, especially locally produced. He is a writer of essays, short-story and poetry, currently working on a book about the human shadow, and pursuing an English degree at USM. He is a musician who studied jazz vocal in another college life, and plays the flute and drums. John has also worked as a professional coach, trainer and organizational developer, working with individuals and organizations to overcome challenges and improve. His curiosity and drive to connect dots keeps him always looking for new endeavors. His latest endeavor is a seminar entitled: Creativity and All That Jazz, during which a live jazz quartet is used to model the 5 core principals of successful organizations. A book on this seminar is also in the works.

In an undisclosed location, Jeff and Lanna have a thoughtful conversation about spirituality, Christianity and Science Fiction. They kibitz about fundamentalism, atheism, and the Duggers and geek out over Doctor Who and Kevin Smith's movie Dogma. Jeff talks about his writing career (journalism, non-fiction) and passions (sci-fi and fantasy). And he answers 10 questions.

Jeff Bouley

A short fiction writer and novelist trapped in a journalist's body, Jeff Bouley has made a living since the early 1990s as an editor/writer for a variety of trade and association magazines, mostly in the healthcare, pharmaceutical or environmental realms. Jeff also...oh, hell, why is Jeff writing about himself in the third person? I've also been blogging as Deacon Blue since around 2007/2008, spouting off on spiritual, social and political topics or generally venting about life, and also started there an epic science fiction story that eventually stalled and is still on hiatus. I'm also an undercover erotic fiction writer with a pretty large (if non-paying) readership across the world, and since I can't go attaching that identity and the blogs that go with it to my real name (since most of it is kinky), I also started up a blog in 2010 to showcase mostly non-sexy fiction, Tales of the Whethermen (a "realistic" superhero-themed world) under my real name. As for other miscellany, I have a wife I love who is trying to save the world (her small part of it at least) while blogging, parenting and trying to enjoy life; a grown son and young daughter who make me proud in very different ways; a love of good craft/microbeer beers and inexpensive red wine; an ability to make some of the best damn chocolate chip cookies around; and a strong appreciation for quality (and sometimes not-so-quality) science fiction, fantasy and horror.
